Conditions We Treat
While it takes a chiropractor with experience to truly assess your spine, many conditions stand out as ones that are likely a result of spinal subluxations (pinched nerves) and need treatment.
- Disc Injuries Slipped discs are very common and are everyday injuries seen in our office. Discs don't actually slip, but due to abnormal pressure they "bulge" out to the side. This "bulge" puts pressure on nerves and other sensitive areas nearby, resulting in in severe low back pain, and spasms, plus pain, numbness and tingling into the leg. Gently, but effectively, we decompress the disc and return it to its original position and then healing can occur. If the disc is so damaged it ruptures and the inside of the disc "leaks out," it will not be able to respond to our care and must be seen by a neurosurgeon. If that has happened, you will be referred immediately to the proper facility.
- Spinal Pain Any spinal pain, whether it is in the neck, mid back, or the low back, should be evaluated. Often the pain or symptom is in the muscles near the spine, but not directly on the spine, and is dismissed as spasms or simple fatigue. If these symptoms recur or stay too long, they are compensating for an underlying cause. That cause is usually spinal misalignment and is treatable.
- Numbness or Tingling Any numbness, tingling or pain into the arms, hands, legs or feet is suspected to be pinched nerves. Sciatica is a good example.
- Headaches Any headaches, including migraines, need to be evaluated. Headaches are the most common and treatable conditions in Dr. Downey's office. Find the cause and fix the condition. There is no need for drugs to mask the symptoms.
- Digestion Frequent burning in the stomach or constipation are routinely and effectively eliminated by restoration of spinal health. Proper organ function depends on a free flow of energy from the brain.
- Children Frequent earaches, colds or flu, and asthma can all be addressed through chiropractic treatment.
- Babies Spitting up too often, constipation, and failure to thrive can be treated with chiropractic. Yes, children and babies can misalign their spines and affect those delicate but vulnerable nerves.
- Planter Fasciitis This common condition results in foot and heel pain when walking. Usually it is noticed after sitting or lying down when the person arises and takes the first few steps. The pain is intense and limping is common, but seems to lessen as more steps are taken. Then the pattern repeats itself after resting. In time, a heel spur often develops as the body tries to compensate to heal itself. The fascia at the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed and can never fully heal, because the patient continues to walk and increase the inflammation. It is a never-ending cycle that can lead to a chronic debilitating condition. Many people try to help themselves by changing shoes or purchasing inserts, but find that the pain persists. Acupuncture breaks the endless-cycle of re-aggravation and allows the body to heal.
- Tennis Elbow Tennis elbow is a painful inflammatory condition on the outside of the elbow. You do not have to play tennis to get it. It can arise with normal everyday activities that involve grasping, lifting or twisting motions with the hands. Once it starts, continued hand activity keeps the area inflamed and it never gets a chance to heal. Often, people have to drink their morning coffee with there opposite hand because it hurts too much to lift the cup to their mouths. Anti-inflamatories are often prescribed, but usually are of no benefit. Acupuncture brings additional energy to the area and allows the body to "de-flame" the tissue so it can heal. Does it work? You bet! Dr. Downey says, "If I could only treat two conditions in my practice with acupuncture it would be planter fasciitis and tennis elbow."
- Post-Surgical Treatment Most patients with previous spinal surgeries, even fusions, can still find some measure of relief after a thorough evaluation.
- Hip, Knee, and Shoulder Replacements People often experience spinal pain or new symptoms after these surgeries and wonder if they can still be treated. Usually these pains are compensations to the new weight-bearing changes and can easily be resolved without harm to the new joints.
